Diet Tips for Your Havanese PuppyAs Canada's 5th most popular dog breed, it is important that we help you to understand how to properly care for a Havanese puppy. One of the pillars of a healthy and happy dog is a good diet. A lively and friendly breed, Havanese dogs have particular dietary requirements that vary from that of other, more sedentary, breeds of canine. So if you are looking to a buy a Havanese puppy, read on for advice on how to properly feed them, so that they have the energy and health to provide you with love and comfort.Focus on CaloriesThe Havanese love to play and run around. Although a full grown Havanese can range from 6 to 22lbs, they differ from other similarly sized dogs in being incredibly active. As a result, you need to pay special attention to your puppy's calorie intake.Growing puppies need even more calories, since they are so active. While a ten pound adult Havanese should consume (1 cup) or approx 404 calories a day, a six pound puppy will need an estimated 466  also (1cup a day). This ensures that they will grow healthy and will not enter a calorie deficit.Heavy on the Protein in this breed is a No No.  They are not a working or herding dog.Beyond just how much to feed your puppy, you need to consider the content of the food. Due to their high energy and need for muscle growth, growing Havanese puppies require  protein from a good source. Check the ingredients of your dog food and see if 'Meat Meal' (chicken, duck, fish or lamb meal) are listed as the top two or three ingredients. Your puppy and adult,  NEEDS  meat meal, which is  in a chicken, the Whole chicken, minus head, wings, feather and feet.   They need the bones, organs, sking and meat.  Pure meat  like those foods people rate 5 out of 5 are Not good for your havanese, they should have No more than 29% protein diet.  Do not buy the prime cuts of meat and blueberries, Diets.  (we like Royal Canin  1st,   then  ProPlan and Eukanuba,  any VET stamped approved foods.   There are some awesome Raw diets,  that are not pure meat that havanese thrive on).   Your pup will be on  Royal Canin Small breed puppy, small bites.   Avoid fibre heavy food such as corn and wheat as this can create digestive problems (check that these are not the first 2 ingredients) . In general, however, the havanese has few health problems and can cope with most food well. When a wild dog kills a chicken,  the first thing they eat is the insides which are grains.   For havanese our grain of choice is Rice.Invest in High Quality FoodOne place where you shouldn't be looking to make financial savings is in your Havanese pups food. While other breeds can get by on cheap brands, the Havanese really thrives on a high quality, nutrient dense diet. Puppies will need three meals a day, while adults can get by on one or two. Don't leave the food out for too long, but encourage your dog to eat it straight away and all in one go if this is what your goal is.  Most adult havanese can have an open bowl of food.    1 cup a day till it is gone. Puppies  Try to get  at least  1 cup a day in them.Feeding your Havanese puppy the right food will ensure they grow to be healthy and live well into old age. You shouldn't cut corners, but invest in the highest quality food. This will give them the nutrients and energy to maintain their active lifestyle. Check the label for VET approved Stamp,   plus 29% protein or less for adults. Avoid  TOO many treats.   Your dog or puppy,  does not need daily treats.   For training we prefer pure chicken,  either in frozen French fry form,  Or freeze dried poultry.  Avoid Doctoring up your pups food, adding human food (meat),  as Once you do this,  you WILL make a fussy eater,  and they will not want to eat their kibble, until you Dr. it up always. If your puppy gets the runs,  (stress induced or ate something from floor),   boil a pot of rice, and put in a piece of chicken to permeate chicken flavor to the rice.  Feed JUST the rice for 2 days...
